Simply put, the game is amazing!
I’ve been keeping an eye out on a game called Planet Coaster which has released an alpha on the 23rd March. It’s a game along the same vein as Themepark and rollercoaster tycoon where you build up your own theme park and make people happy. So far I’ve been playing with the game for about 12 hours and have a little sandbox park built up and thought that I had to share this with everyone because it is simply amazing! If you like building games or if you liked themepark and rollercoaster tycoon style of gaming you’re going to love Planet Coaster too!
In the video playing, you’ll see various gameplay of me setting up sandbox park.. including setting up and decorating the rollercoaster.
In the original video that I watched, it showed an amazing amount of customisation possibilities which blew me away.
The open alpha allows you to pre-purchase a copy of the game and play while they develop it, using the community as bug testers and providing feedback .. So far they have 3 planned alpha stages, although there are no dates on when the next phase of release will be
– Phase 1 Alpha which includes modular building and paths, there is still lots to play around with in order to get a general feel for the game.
– Phase 2 adds roller coaster and landscape editing.
– Phase 3 adds community functionality and blue prints.
Although in saying that, you can gain access to the roller coaster via a cheat code, for a tutorial on how to do that, click here to open a new page.
The game has no tutorials, however its fairly easy to get the hang of the controls if you’ve played this style of game in the past. For example the usual movement keys include A S D W, right click to change angle and so forth. The only thing that keeps catching me out is the default mouse setup appears to be inverted, which is a little confusing to me.. There is a help feature that you can take advantage of in the top left hand side of the screen that tells you everything you can do with whatever object, building or ride you have selected.
Customising rides is brilliant, you get to decide where the entrance and exit are placed.. something that has irrationally bugged me in other games. You have to place a queue and an exit line. Admittedly, pathing is a little difficult to get the hang of although it can be put down to inexperience with the tool and an alpha version of the game.
While currently there isn’t much in the way of themes, there is still a lot that can be done with the items available. Currently there are a lot of pirate imagery with skulls and cross bones, large bones, swords, booty chest and so forth..
The trees in game are also fairly basic with small shrub, large generic red plant, 3 size palm shrub looking plants and then 3 taller palm trees and 3 larger trees. You’re able to do quite a lot with them to decorate the park when you add the various decorations together.
Lighting is a big part of this game. You can place lights pretty much anywhere as long as they don’t get in the way of a moving part of a ride, which is amazing. You can stack objects together and hide lights inside them. Night time is quite often more dynamic to look at than the day time.
Overall the game is brilliant. I can’t wait until they add more.
