I wanted to improve my stats in Overwatch. I am by no means a professional. I have a lot of room for improvement myself. As always, I’ve read around the internet and have found lots of great pieces of information that have increased my skills. Writing about the various things that I’ve discovered has helped me clarify things for me and hopefully help others in the process.

- Be Aggressive
- Watch for flankers
- Flank
- Watch your health
- Be map aware
- Know where your team is
- Play to the objectives
- Party with others
- Use your ultimate
Be Aggressive
This includes being on a healer / support character. Don’t sit back and rely on your team mates, shoot the enemy. Do things. Cap the point when you can. Push the payload when safe. If you’re a tank, be in their faces while protecting your team, don’t sit back and wait for your team to clear a path. If you’re on Mercy, don’t be lazy and leave your healing beam on, change it to damage boost. If Reinhardt has his shield up and someone else behind it is attacking, boost them. Once someone has taken damage then heal them. Otherwise you’re just wasting charge time. If you’re on Lucio and hear someone doing their ultimate, you can either speed boost so people can get out-of-the-way or use your own ultimate if you’ve got it.
The game has flankers, AKA people who attack from behind. With the kill feed on and being aware of where your team mates are (are the team icons in front of you or behind?), you’ll know if you’ve got a flanker. Also, when you’re the flanker, you need to know the routes. By exploring around all the maps, you’ll know that you can go around the enemy team and pick a few of them off.
Be Smart
Sometimes its best to back off and get a health pot, than staying and dying. Not only does this deny your enemy the ability to charge their ultimate on you, it also reduces the amount of time you’re out of action. The respawn timer is 10 seconds (12 seconds in overtime), as well as the length of time it takes you to run back. This is devastating for your team. Play smart, be aware of your health. If you dip below half, get a health pot or back off so that a healer can help you.
Remember: Having a support character heal you, allows them to build their ultimates. If its safe to do so, allow the healers to heal you.
Be Aware
Don’t go in alone. It doesn’t matter if you’re playing Reinhardt, Mercy or Soldier76. Just. Don’t. You’re better off waiting until your team spawns and running back with them. Lets go into this a little deeper. This doesn’t mean stand around and do nothing at the spawn point. This means move forward, but don’t engage the enemy until you’ve got someone with you or you’re 110% confident that you’ll beat them OR wait until you see an opportune moment to engage the enemy team. If you’re someone who flanks, then wait until the team has someone in front to focus on so that they don’t all spin around and aim at you.
Being aware of your surroundings will help you know where the enemy is. Turning kill feed on will help with your awareness. Options > Gameplay > On. This will place icons in the top right of your screen with people’s names in it. Blue is your team, red is the enemy team. It reads as Person1 killed Person2.
How does this help? You’ll know whether it’s wise to move in. You’ll know who has killed who, including multikills.

As I’ve explained in my post Overwatch: PSA’s and Tips! Do you have any to add?, the icons of your team mean more than just “that way”. Basically, yellow means that this person is in combat. You can either go in and help them or if they die, know to avoid that route.
Partying and Communication
I recommend being in a group of 2-3. This is generally a good number to have in your party. When you start having 4-6, you start to find teams that work together. This can be difficult to combat against, and isn’t worth the party bonus that increases your experience gain by 20%.
When you communicate with your team, you stand a better chance of winning because you’ll be working together as a unit rather than 6 individuals. See a Bastion / Sniper somewhere? Someone low on health? See the teleporter? Having trouble with a particular person on the enemy team? Call it. Talk.
Remember, we’re all playing to have fun so don’t be a troll when you’re talking on mic. Cussing someone out isn’t going to help them improve their game. Instead of saying “You’re a **** Widow“, try perhaps “Widow, we need a XXXX any chance you’d change, since this team makeup isn’t working?” or tell your Widow where they are going wrong if you can. “Widow, try another ledge that one isn’t good for sniping“.
“You catch more flies with honey than you do with vinegar”
Ultimates
Holding on to your ultimate for the perfect moment isn’t always the best thing to do. You aren’t always going to get a multikill with them. Sometimes it’s best to get a guaranteed single kill than it is to hold it for a possible quad kill.
