There aren’t any random seeds lying around the place however,plants that you can harvest are found throughout all of the maps. Each time to load into a new lot, it takes at least 4 mins of game play in order to have wild plants become harvest-able.

Your options to learn the gardening skill are:

• To buy
  • Via the computer “Order” option, or
  • by buying a planting box and then clicking on the planting box to then buy the seeds.

 

• Computers can be found under the “Study” option when rooms are sorted by
  objects or if you’re sorting by Function, they are under Electronics. Any computer will do.
• Plant boxes can be found in the “Outdoor” room or if you’re sorting by Function, Miscellaneous option (the square with 3 dots).

 

Seeds come in packets, once you’ve bought them you will need click to open in order to discover what you’ve been randomly given.

To plant, click and drag the fruit/vegetable to where you’re wanting them to be planted. Don’t worry if you place them in the wrong spot, they are movable in build mode. Then have your sim plant them by clicking on the object on the ground and selecting the appropriate option.. As with previous versions and in real life you need to water and weed your plants in order to ensure that they are well looked after. If you don’t do this, they die. You need to make sure you regularly to the following in order to help your plants not only survive but thrive.

• Water.
• Weed.
• Spray for bugs (When black bugs fly around them).
• Evolve  (When white sparkles appear, more on this below).

As you level up your gardening skill, you get additional perks to help you on your way.

• Level 1: Plant, water weed and harvest.
• Level 2: Nothing.
• Level 3: Research gardening at the PC (Web… Research).
• Level 4: Talk to plants. Which helps your sim fulfil their social needs as well if needed.
• Level 5: The ability to fertilise, which is useful for evolution.
• Level 6: Other sims can complement you on your garden.
• Level 7: You can take a cutting and graft them onto plants.
• Level 8: If you’re interested in getting a Bonsai Tree, you can shape it into different designs.
• Level 9: You can now “Tend” to your garden which will let you to look after the garden (reportedly weed and water at the same time without having to select two different options and do it quicker).
• Level 10: Can mentor other sims, if you have the “Mentor” trait, 1,000 Sim Points obtained from completing whims.

When your plants are happy and healthy, you’ll start to see the plants sparkle, this means that the plant is ready to level up. There are 10 different levels for your plant to go through, each time the plant evolves the produce will taste yummier and be worth more money. Evolve your plants as soon as you see it sparkling.

The more looked after your plants are, the faster they’ll evolve. Fertilising your plants helps progress through the levels faster. You can use other plants as fertiliser as well as fish. Its been said that fish are a better source of fertilizer than anything else in game.

Leaving something that is ready to be harvested on the plant until after evolution won’t change the value of the produce. The price or quality of the harvest is determined by the quality of the plant when it first appears in game and doesn’t scale up with the plants evolution.

Don’t harvest your plants straight away. Make sure that the plant is full before doing so. Each plant has approximately 8-10 spots allocated.

When you harvest your plants you are given the fruit, flower, herb or vegetable in your inventory. The produce harvested will be the same level as the plant that it was harvested from. If you decide to plant any of the harvest, you will get a plant that is of the same quality. This comes in handy when grafting and splicing, explained further below.

You can either store the produce in your sim’s inventory, the household inventory, refrigerator and use it in dishes, display it on your bench or bookshelf or sell it for household funds.

Unlike previous versions of the game, you’re not able to eat any of the produce that you harvest. In Sims 4, you’re able to take a cutting of one plant and graft it onto another plant combining two or more plants together. In some cases combining plants together will create a new plant, this is called splicing. If you’re gardening to make money this is really important. Plants take anywhere from 24 to 96 game hours to grow and produce its fruit, flower, herbs or spices. The game uses the base plant as the timer, for example carrots take approx 24 hours to get a full harvest so plant this first. You can then graft from a Lemon cutting to the carrot plant, which would normally take 60 hours to produce a full harvest. Since it’s using the base plant of carrot this timer is brought down as it will be producing Lemons at the same rate as grapes.

While you can graft several different plants together, it’s advised that you keep this low if you’re going for money, two different types, three at max. Each plant has the opportunity to give anywhere from 8 to 10 items per harvest. If you bombard your plant with too much variety, the chances of it producing a more expensive crops reduces.

When you graft one plant onto another, the plant will appear as a sprout. The new sprout will continue to have the same level it once did.

Additionally, you can only take two cuttings from a plant before you kill it. You can revive the plant by paying a small fee.

Cuttings get put into the 1 pile in your inventory. Unless they are “NEW”, there is no way really to identify what cutting they are from. Something to be mindful of if you’re out getting a lot of cuttings at once.

If you’re gardening for money, it is recommended that you use a base plant of Grapes as they are a relatively quick growing, high profit plant, easily accessible appearing in the seed bags and many public places.

Once you’ve levelled up enough, you’ll see the option to take slides from your plants. These can then be analysed by the “Life Under a Microscope” machine, found under “Activities and skills” Chess board icon, or just type it into the search bar. It will allow you to look at your slides and turn them into artworks that you can either put up on your wall or sell for extra money. However, the machine is expensive and its huge! The plus side is that it will level up your sims Logic skill and can quickly cover the money you used to buy it.

Cow Plants are a large plant-like pet-plant being (Pictured below in the cute, less dangerous growing stage).

The benefit of having a Cow Plant is that they produce “emotion drinks”. Every so often the Cow Plant is ready to be harvested, or milked. When it is milked, it will produce a potion of the same emotion that the sim has at the time.

Interacting with the Cow Plant will still increase your sims gardening skill.

A Cow Plant needs to be fed, other wise it will tempt your sims into being its food by offering a slice of cake. You need to stay on top of the feeding as your Cow Plant will die quickly, leaving behind a skeleton.

When a sim is eaten they are either spat back out with negative / neutral emotions, which generally happens the first time or they are swallowed. Should they be unlucky enough to be eaten twice, they will be swallowed. When a sim dies the Cow Plant produces a drink that is called “Essence of <sim>’s Life”, if another sim drinks this potion they will have a few days added to their life.

Some plant types can be found “out in the wild”, growing on other lots throughout town and in the hidden maps. In order to be able to harvest from them, you need to on the lot for a reasonable amount of time. If you’re high enough level, it’s often quicker to take a cutting of the plant and grow your own at home. Look at the spreadsheet for details on what plants can be found where. You are unable to evolve plants in the wild. Caretakers look after the plants as well as your fellow neighbours.

If you’re going for a Sim who is going to focus on gardening as a “career” (even though you can’t actually set this as a career) you’ll want one that loves the outdoors since they will be outdoors a lot, unless you’re going to build a greenhouse.

Obtaining the Freelance Botanist Aspiration will be great as it will help you on your way through the skill.

Once you’ve been playing for a while working on completing their little aspirations, you’ll be able to spend your points on additional traits. Of these I’d recommend Super Green Thumb, so that your plants have more vitality. It costs 4,000 points but worth it. If you’re getting annoyed with frequent bathroom trips or sleep getting them down you could also obtain the Never Weary and other traits that eliminate the need to work on your sims needs.
