Every few months Overwatch has a new competitive season where players can compete against each other on the basis of skill, as well as seasonal events to obtain cosmetic items. There doesn’t appear to be any particular set time for a competitive season, nor is there any set time for an event. They can happen at any time, as can character releases.
So far, each season has started with 10 placement matches where your skill level is determined. You are placed in 1 of 7 ranks (Bronze, Silver, Gold, Platinum, Diamond, Master and Grand Master). Your skill rating can go up and down depending on your skill level and that of your team. Each season has had it’s own list of changes to compensate and correct for the community. Below are the dates of each of the seasons as well as how long each of them have gone for and any other bits of information that I’ve found useful or interesting to add to the season.
Events have included sprays, emotes, highlight intros, voice lines, victory poses, player icons and skins. The items have all been obtainable via loot boxes however, their ability to be bought via the hero page has remained in question until the event has been released. So far two delivery methods have been used where they have only been obtainable via loot boxes and available to be bought, but at an inflated price. Duplicates however, still gave the same amount as their non-event counterparts. Skin distribution seems to be a focal point for the community however, not so much for Blizzard. I’ve been maintaining a table of Overwatch Hero skins and the events they’ve come from.
